April 8, 2025 (Calgary, AB) – De Havilland Aircraft of Canada (DHC) today announced that it has launched the development of a new avionics solution for the Dash 8-100 and 200 aircraft. With our partner Universal Avionics, a new customized Universal InSight avionics suite is now under development and will be available for customers wishing to upgrade their aircraft.

“We are pleased to introduce an upgraded avionics suite for our Dash 8-100 and 200 customers,” said Jean-Philippe Cote, Vice President of Programs and Business Improvement for De Havilland Canada. “This upgrade will ensure that these rugged and reliable aircraft will be flying for many years to come.”

In cooperation with our partners Universal Avionics and JANA Inc., DHC is developing an avionics upgrade that will increase navigational capabilities and improve safety by providing improved situational awareness for pilots, making it an excellent solution for current operators. The certification of the new avionics’ solution is anticipated to be obtained in the first half of 2026. Widerøe’s Flyveselskap AS will be the launch customer for the upgrade program.

Universal’s InSight flight display system installation on the Dash 8 adds five high-resolution LCD displays with improved synthetic vision and digital engine indication, replacing aging CRT equipment to remove unnecessary weight making this an upgrade a significant improvement over the current avionics suite.

“Partnering with Universal Avionics to upgrade our Dash 8-100 & 200 aircraft reinforces De Havilland Canada’s commitment to investing in the fleet and delivering modernized and reliable solutions to our customers. The new avionics provides a good solution to replace components difficult to replace and repair,” said Cote. “This solution is part of our overall goal as a company to keep our existing fleet flying.”

April 1, 2025 (Calgary, AB) – Today, De Havilland Aircraft of Canada (DHC) announced that it has acquired all of the shares of Fleet Canada Inc. (Fleet) of Fort Erie, Ontario. Fleet is a current supplier of parts and aerostructures for De Havilland Canada as well as a number of other Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs). The company operates in a 500,000 square foot facility in Southern Ontario, which has the capacity to support the growth and expansion of De Havilland Canada.

With the addition of Fleet, DHC is now able to in-source a number of capabilities that the company did not already have including metal-to-metal bonding and advanced composites. Currently, Fleet is providing parts for De Havilland Canada on the Twin Otter, De Havilland Canadair-515 and Dash 8 programs. It is expected the capacity at the Fleet facility will grow as new machinery is added and additional staff are brought on to keep pace with growing demand.

“By adding the capacity and capabilities of Fleet Canada, De Havilland Aircraft of Canada will be better able to meet the needs of our customers,” said Brian Chafe, CEO of De Havilland Canada. “Our focus is to keep our fleet flying and to meet the growing demand for the De Havilland Canadair 515. The acquisition of Fleet’s team and capacity will go a long way to accomplishing this.”

“I’m thrilled to add Fleet’s manufacturing capabilities and the team’s skills to De Havilland Canada’s toolkit,” said Gerry Kelly, DHC Vice President of Manufacturing. “Fleet have been a terrific supplier for DHC, and their craftsmanship and in-house processing capabilities are a great addition to deliver timely solutions for our customers.”

“With over 46,000 workers across more than 200 companies, Ontario has established itself as a key player in the production and development of cutting-edge aerospace and aerostructure parts,” said Vic Fedeli, Ontario’s Minister of Economic Development, Job Creation and Trade. “We congratulate De Havilland Canada on the growth of their operations and look forward to seeing Fleet Canada’s craftsmanship continue to define the future of advanced aerostructure manufacturing here in Ontario.”

Farnborough, United Kingdom, July 24, 2024 –

Canadian pioneers in regional aviation, De Havilland Aircraft of Canada Limited (De Havilland Canada) announced at the Farnborough International Airshow a new OEM Certified Refurbishment Program for its legendary fleet of Dash 8-400 aircraft that will offer the option to equip refurbished aircraft with new Pratt & Whitney Canada PW150A engines.

The PW150A engine, the most powerful civil turboprop in production, recently demonstrated up to 30% increased time on wing, a testament of the 25 years of continuous investments through in-service product improvements, consistently bringing the latest technology to market and maintaining a 99.97% dispatch reliability over the last decade. The availability of a fleet of proven and modernized Dash-8 400 aircraft could not be more welcomed by the industry.

“DHC and Pratt & Whitney Canada have a long history of leading aerospace innovation in Canada, and we are pleased to continue that collaboration through the OEM Certified Refurbishment Program De Havilland Canada announced today,” and said Jean-Philippe Côté, Vice-President Programs and Business Improvement. “There are thousands of DHC aircraft, powered by Pratt & Whitney Canada engines operating daily, from pole to pole and on all continents, and through this collaboration we will continue to explore the best product solutions for our global customers.”

“We are committed to supporting De Havilland Canada with their Certified Refurbishment Program of the Dash 8-400 fleet with new production and refurbished PW150A engines. Our continued collaboration with De Havilland Canada on this, and other initiatives, has produced legendary aircraft with a deep-rooted Canadian foundation. As we celebrate the collective shaping of the regional turboprop industry spanning over 40 years, this program will ensure operators will benefit from reliable technologies for many years to come,” said Anthony Rossi, vice-president Sales and Marketing, Pratt & Whitney Canada.

At a time when regional turboprop aviation is being hailed for its sustainability, reliability and performance capabilities, De Havilland Canada and Pratt & Whitney Canada mark the 40th anniversary of the maiden commercial flight of DHC’s Dash 8-100 aircraft powered by PW100 engines. This aircraft has helped transform regional aviation around the world and brought commercial air services to thousands of communities, helping build immeasurable social and economic capacity.

Collaborating to Propel a Sustainable Aerospace Future

Today’s turboprop aircraft flying routes of less than one-hour in duration consume significantly less fuel and a reduction in CO2 emissions when compared to similar-sized regional jets on the same routes.

With the world focused on reducing emissions with enhanced performance, De Havilland Canada and P&WC are committed to advancing solutions to enable more sustainable aviation, including by collaborating on the RTX Hybrid-Electric Flight Demonstrator, based on a Dash 8-100 aircraft. De Havilland Canada and Pratt & Whitney Canada will continue to explore the best products and solutions to bring to market and benefit customers worldwide.

Both companies have been partnering in the development of a strong Canadian aerospace ecosystem for over 60 years and our enduring presence in the wider aviation industry reflects a common determination and ability to develop and enter into service new technologies, while always being guided by the needs and priorities of our customers.

Additional DHC and P&WC Collaboration

The DHC-6 Twin Otter Classic 300-G

De Havilland Canada announced last year launch of the new Twin Otter Classic 300-G aircraft, which will offer two engine options to operators, the PT6A-34 currently powering the Twin Otter 400 series and a new PT6A-27 bringing changes to improve maintainability and reliability.

De Havilland Canada and Pratt & Whitney Canada intend to bring these enhancements to the PT6A-27 on the legacy DH6-300 fleet, providing access to the renewed maintainability and reliability. This retrofit will bring optimal utilization of engine assets of current Twin Otter operators.

Current and future Twin Otter operators can participate in Pratt & Whitney Canada’s TBO escalation process, providing extended Time Between Overhauls (TBO) under certain circumstances. Looking at the current Twin Otter 400 series, 40% of engines have obtained up to 2x time on-wing benefits through the TBO escalation process, helping reduce operating costs.

New Classic 300-G operators choosing either the PT6A-27s or PT6A-34s can benefit from existing TBO extensions on their specific engine models.

De Havilland Canada’s DHC-515 Firefighter – the world’s best firefighting aircraft

De Havilland Canada also previously announced that Pratt & Whitney Canada will be powering the next generation of aerial firefighter, the DHC-515 aircraft, with the PW123AF engine. This engine has been proven as the workhorse of the CL415 fleet and will support the new DHC-515’s mission to protect people and forests in countries around the world.

De Havilland Canada’s Dash 8 100/200/300 powered by the PW121 and PW123 engine

Powered by the PW100, the most reliable engine family in the market, with best-in-class reliability, Pratt & Whitney Canada continues to innovate and tailor commercial solutions to Dash 8 operators. P&WCSMART™ portfolio includes hot section inspection and overhaul fixed price offerings, allowing our customers to accurately budget for their engine maintenance costs.

Farnborough, United Kingdom, July 24, 2024 – This week at the Farnborough International Airshow, De Havilland Aircraft of Canada (De Havilland Canada) is celebrating the 50th anniversary of the first Shorts Brothers 330 to fly at Farnborough in 1974.

The Short 330, a 30-seat twin-turboprop aircraft designed and manufactured by the Shorts Brothers, originated from the Short Skyvan. Following the successful introduction of the Short 330, Shorts Brothers saw potential for it to be utilized in military utility applications, and in the early 1980s launched a number of versions of the Sherpa, which incorporated several modifications including strengthened cabin floors and a full-width rear ramp door. De Havilland Canada acquired the SD 3-60 C-23B+ Sherpa in 2019 following its service in the US Army. The aircraft attended the CANSEC conference earlier this year in Ottawa.

The Sherpa, along with the Short Skyvan and Short 330 & 360 type certificates, joined the De Havilland Aircraft of Canada family in 2019. Valued for their robustness and operational flexibility, their legacies live on through their contribution to regional air transport and specialized operations. The Sherpa stands as a testament to the very best in designing efficient and durable aircraft for regional and specialized use, leaving a mark in aviation history as a reliable workhorse of its era.

The Short 330 aircraft 50-year anniversary celebration at the Farnborough International Airshow marks a significant milestone in the history of this aircraft family. This event highlights the enduring legacy of these aircraft, showcasing its evolution over the past five decades, technological advancements, and its impact on the aerospace industry.
The Sherpa is a rugged, reliable, STOL aircraft that has stood the test of time and like other De Havilland Canada aircraft, can serve multiple roles including cargo or passenger transport, paratroop and other humanitarian missions as it can take off and land in some of the world’s most challenging environments.

In total, over 450 Short Skyvan and Short 330/360/Sherpa aircraft were produced, and nearly one-third are still active today.

The Sherpa is an important part of the family of De Havilland Canada aircraft and we look forward to reintroducing it to customers to gauge market interest in the coming months.

Watch the video here to learn more about the Sherpa.

Farnborough, United Kingdom, July 23, 2024 – Introduced last year at the 2023 Paris Air Show, the De Havilland Canada DHC-6 Twin Otter Classic 300-G (Classic 300-G) is on schedule for certification later this year with first delivery in the first quarter of 2025.

Production of the first Twin Otter Classic 300-G is well underway in our facilities in Calgary, Alberta. This aircraft will be the 998th Twin Otter produced since the aircraft was launched and the 1000th Twin Otter will be completed shortly after the first Classic 300-G is delivered.

As part of the certification and production process for the Classic 300-G, a new Garmin 1000 avionics suite is being certified by Transport Canada for inclusion as standard on new aircraft.

In addition to the new Garmin avionics suite, today at the Farnborough International Airshow, De Havilland Canada introduced our all-new cabin interior for the aircraft.

De Havilland Canada has selected GAL Aerospace for the new interior panels and Aviointeriors SPA as suppliers for the new passenger seats.

The new interior of the Twin Otter enhances passenger comfort while significantly reducing the aircraft’s Basic Empty Weight. The panels are all-new, crafted from durable and lightweight materials. Redesigned passenger interfaces are integrated into the ceiling, featuring intuitive pictograms for placards and new cabin window bezels that allow more light to fill the cabin. The all-new seats are 15% lighter, come with e-leather upholstery as standard, and feature a convenient fold-flat backrest. These improvements allow operators to transport more passengers or cargo per flight, maximizing efficiency and operational capacity.

For current operators looking to modernize their Twin Otters, the Garmin avionics suite, redesigned cabin interior, and new passenger seats are now available to order from DHC, with deliveries expected in 2025.

The Classic 300-G is the newest generation of the Twin Otter, carrying passengers, transporting VIPs, moving cargo, conducting medivac operations, and performing special missions in the world’s most unforgiving environments. When mounted on amphibious floats, these aircraft move seamlessly between paved surfaces and water-landing areas.

Farnborough, United Kingdom, July 22, 2024 – In 2018, De Havilland Aircraft of Canada (then Viking Air) announced a program to convert and upgrade previously used CL-215 aircraft into the CL-415 Enhanced Aerial Firefighter. To date, nine aircraft have been upgraded with the remaining two to be completed.

Building on the success of this program, and in keeping with our commitment to “keep the fleet flying,” De Havilland Canada (DHC) is pleased to announce a similar program for the Dash 8 fleet. DHC has actively been acquiring aircraft in the marketplace and has begun upgrading these aircraft for delivery to customers looking to expand their fleets or become Dash 8 customers for the first time.

The De Havilland Canada OEM Certified Refurbishment Program is a program whereby DHC acquires, upgrades, and re-markets the aircraft for each specific customers’ needs. Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) work will take place at our facilities in Calgary, Alberta.

Refurbishments offered include:

Aircraft configuration to match the customer’s existing fleet

Completion of overdue maintenance, integration of Airworthiness Directives, and Service Bulletin upgrades

Airframe life extensions through our ESP (Extended Service Plan) to extend the lives of Dash 8-100/200/300 to 120,000 cycles, or the ESP+ which can take the Dash 8-100 to 160,000 cycles

Freighter conversions, including the introduction of the new Dash 8-400 Large Cargo Door and Quick Change between cargo and passenger missions

Avionics upgrades

To date, De Havilland Canada has acquired 28 Dash 8-400 aircraft for the program.

De Havilland Canada’s Dash 8 aircraft are well known for their ruggedness, long service life, unique performance capabilities, and market leading operating economics. The DHC OEM Certified Refurbishment Program will extend the operational life of these aircraft and meet the needs of current and future customers of DHC.

Following today’s announcement of De Havilland Canada’s roadmap of the future of the Dash 8, this new program supports our customer’s need to grow or renew their Dash 8 fleets while we work on our production plans for the future through DHC’s Product Strategy Council.

As an industry-leading OEM, DHC is uniquely positioned to provide turnkey solutions to customers. Customers will benefit from access and integration of DHC’s Engineering/DAO support, local parts depot, program expertise and history, and all the support and services we can offer during delivery and entry into service phase.

Farnborough, United Kingdom, July 22, 2024 – For more than four decades, the Dash 8 family of aircraft has established the benchmark for regional turboprops accumulating over 46 million flight cycles of experience in operations globally. The aircraft type has delivered unequalled performance, robustness, value, and efficiency to a wide range of operations in some of the most demanding and harsh environments on the planet.

With new DHC production facilities at De Havilland Field near Calgary, Alberta coming on stream in the latter portion of the decade, the time is right to determine what operators are looking for in their fleet planning, and where a new Dash 8 might fit in.

To best understand our customer’s needs, De Havilland Canada has assembled a Product Strategy Council and has been meeting over the past months with operators in North America, Oceania, Japan, Africa, and Europe, to understand their requirements and expectations as their businesses objectives and passenger preferences evolve into the future.

Once these discussions are complete, De Havilland Canada will be considering the feedback we have received from our Product Strategy Council to determine the roadmap for the Dash 8 program strategy. This is the same approach DHC undertook prior to developing new production programs for the DHC-515 Firefighter and the Twin Otter Classic 300-G.

“De Havilland Aircraft of Canada would like to thank the operators who have participated in this important initiative,” said Ryan DeBrusk, Vice-President of Sales and Marketing for De Havilland Canada. “It’s clear that the Dash 8 continues to be a highly valued fleet for operators around the world whether in an airline’s network or performing a specialized mission. Our teams have been energized by the valuable feedback we have received and are working hard to provide a roadmap to our customers that outlines the future of the Dash 8 program.”

While this work is underway, we remain committed to enhancing the platform through in-service support and new features such as cargo conversion upgrades, cabin enhancements, avionics upgrades, our ESP+ life extension program, and our OEM Certified Refurbishment Program.

CALGARY, Alberta, October 20, 2023 – De Havilland Aircraft of Canada Limited (De Havilland Canada) is pleased to announce that it has selected Universal Avionics, an Elbit Systems company, as lead supplier of integrated flight decks for De Havilland Canada’s CL-215T and CL-415 firefighting aircraft. The Universal Avionics flight deck system will support aerial firefighting operations with NextGen flight display, flight management, data communication, and connectivity systems.

This solution builds on the history and ruggedness of the CL-215 and CL-415 and will increase the functionality and effectiveness of this legendary firefighting aircraft family, which will now feature Universal Avionics’ state-of-the-art navigational instruments for enhanced safety and improved situational awareness.

In addition, as De Havilland Canada continues to grow its engineering, manufacturing, maintenance repair, and overhaul teams across Canada, De Havilland Canada is proud to announce the purchase of Mid-Canada Mod Center (MC2) and Avionics Design Services (ADS), which have worked on Universal Avionics installations, upgrades, and modifications for decades.

With facilities in Ontario at Toronto Pearson Airport and Region of Waterloo Airport, and other engineering team members located in Ontario, British Columbia, and Alberta, De Havilland Canada welcomes the addition of MC2 and ADS. Their expertise in avionics upgrade services for both commercial and business aircraft will enhance De Havilland Canada’s ability to provide timely, cost-effective solutions to its customers and the over 3,000 aircraft they operate. They are also a Transport Canada Design Approval Organization that develops Supplemental Type Certificates and Repair Design Approvals for MC2 and ADS and its customers. MC2 and ADS’ leadership team will remain in place, and the company will operate as a subsidiary of De Havilland Canada.
